1. What can I do with PatternMaker?

PatternMaker has two basic functions. First, it is a computer-aided design (CAD) program. Second, our macro feature lets you type in some choices and measurements and then drafts a pattern based on those measurements. Each macro is a file separate from PatternMaker itself and is programmed separately. You can use the CAD features to make your own patterns, you can use macros to let the program make custom-fit patterns for you, or you can start with a macro pattern as a sloper and then use PatternMaker to work with it.

2. What is CAD?

CAD stands for computer-aided design. Better-known CAD programs are used in fields such as engineering and architecture. CAD programs contain drawing and measuring tools to do the same things you would do on paper with pencil, ruler, French curve, etc. but with the speed, precision, etc. of a computer and without the time-consuming labor of drawing, measuring, and redrawing. PatternMaker is a CAD program that was specifically designed for flat sewing patterns, so it's easier to use for this purpose than a non-specialized program such as AutoCAD (tm). PatternMaker is a complete, standalone CAD program -- it doesn't require any other CAD program to run.

3. Will it run on my computer?

PatternMaker will run on any computer running Windows 95 or higher version. See our System Requirements for details.

4. How do I print my patterns?

PatternMaker prints just like any other Windows program. Patterns always print out full size. and the software will automatically split up your printout among multiple pages if necessary. If you're using a desktop printer with letter-size paper, you may get 20-30 pages that you'll need to tape together. Better is to use roll-feed or banner paper, and even better is a large plotter if available. Remember that PatternMaker doesn't control how a pattern is printed. It tells Windows to print, and Windows handles the output according to the printing device you have selected.

Always use the lowest resolution (dpi) and fewest colors your printer allows. Your patterns will be easier to see and will print faster.
More on printing.

5. Can I import/export patterns to X?

PatternMaker has its own proprietary file format, but it can import/export files in DXF (AutoCAD tm) format. This is a fairly common format for CAD programs, cutting machines, etc.

6. Will PatternMaker fit me?

This question doesn't apply. With a CAD program like PatternMaker, there are no size or shape limitations because the patterns aren't built into the program.

7. I'm a size 24. Will the macro patterns fit me?

They use actual measurements, not numbered sizes. There are no specific limits on the range of measurements that will work correctly.

8. Can I use PatternMaker for doll clothes/stuffed animals/furniture covers/backpacks/etc.?

Yes, you can draw any pattern you like. The macro patterns will not work for doll clothes automatically. It is possible to create the pattern full size and scale down the pattern to fit a doll.

9. Will the macro patterns fit me?

Yes. They've been tested with hundreds of subjects and fit most people. The fitting method is based on a system that has been in use in Scandinavia for decades. Our designer also teaches sewing, and she has also tested the measuring instructions for ease of use. Most people get a good fit on the first try. We like this measuring system because it's forgiving -- a little error won't ruin your whole pattern.

10. Yes, but will they REALLY fit?

Everybody should make a fitting muslin first, to check your measurements. For the few people who can't get a good result, or if you have a special fitting problem such as uneven shoulders, our CAD features give you the tools to alter the pattern as necessary.

11. Can I try one of the patterns for fit?

We include free patterns for a women's fitting bodice and trousers when you download the demo (the others are there to look at, but measurements are disabled). Try entering your own measurements and sew up a muslin for yourself. Fitting women's trousers is a fairly rigorous test for a computer program, and we think you'll like the results.

12. I'm a professional pattern maker. Is the Home Studio right for me?

The Home Studio is designed for professional use, unless you need specialized features such as grading, etc. from the higher versions. It is an excellent CAD program at a very good price. It allows you to do everything in the computer that you can do on paper and more!

13. Can I do design sketches with PatternMaker?

No, it's really only designed for flat pattern work. You can do simple line drawings with PatternMaker, but that's all. You'll need a drawing or painting program to do sketches.

14. Can I do 3-dimensional fitting and draping with PatternMaker?

No. PatternMaker is strictly a 2-D CAD program.

15. Can I take pictures from magazines and turn them into patterns?

If you're a skilled pattern maker, you can do this about the same way you would via pencil and paper. PatternMaker will not do this sort of thing automatically. It is not a substitute for pattern making skill.

16. Can I scan patterns into the computer?

Scanners don't work directly with PatternMaker, but digitizing tablets do. You'll need the Expert or Marker version of the software. If you're digitizing small-scale printed patterns, you can scale them up afterwards. If you have a closet full of slopers, keeping them on the computer will save you a lot of space.

It is possible to scan a line drawing and convert it to a CAD format and then import the file into PatternMaker Home Studio. It is also possible to use the scanned image as a background image and then trace the image in PatternMaker Home Studio.

17. Do I need to register the program?

You must register the software in order to have access to the editing and CAD features, even if you are just using the trial version. There is no cost to register for the 30 day trial.

18. How do I register the program?

Start the program or demo. Go under the Settings menu and select "Register..." and follow the directions in the dialog box you see. Complete registration directions.

19. I can't find all the program versions. Where are they?

All versions are built into the demo program, but their functionality is locked up until you buy and register the version you want.

20. What are these patterns you're selling?

The pattern sets we currently sell are all based on the Scandinavian fitting system. The designs and macro programming are by Leena Lähteenmäki. They are designed to work either as complete patterns ready to sew, or as a starting point for you to add your own styling. In this way, they're like custom-fit slopers. Since they're all based on the same measurements, you only need to measure yourself once for all the pattern sets.

21. What about other designers?

We invite other designers who would like to sell custom-fit patterns. We will sell other macro sets as available. Other designers' macros may be based on other fitting methods, as decided by the designer. Please visit our independent designer webpage.

22. I don't like the Scandinavian fitting system.

We do. One of its greatest advantages is that almost everybody can take the measurements and get good results. Other systems we have seen require an excessive number of measurements, or need an expert measurer to get them just right, or are designed so that a little discrepancy will ruin the shape of the whole pattern. But if you are a designer and want to make macros based on another fitting system, it can be done easily with MacroGen4, our macro generator software.

23. Does PatternMaker charge sales tax?

PatternMaker required by law to charge Internet Sales Tax in the states of Florida, Washington & California.
